Background of the Study

The construction industry plays a critical role in economic development, yet it faces persistent challenges due to significant skill gaps in the workforce. In Funakaye Local Government Area, Gombe State, the shortage of adequately trained professionals in the construction sector has emerged as a major impediment to industry growth and project efficiency. Technical education is increasingly recognized as a vital intervention for addressing these skill gaps by providing specialized training that combines theoretical foundations with practical application (Emeka, 2023). Through comprehensive programs that focus on modern construction techniques, safety standards, and innovative building practices, technical education can empower workers to meet the evolving demands of the construction industry.

In Funakaye, the rapid advancement of construction technologies and the increasing complexity of building projects necessitate a workforce that is proficient in both traditional and contemporary methods. Technical education initiatives are designed to equip individuals with these competencies, ensuring that they can operate advanced machinery, interpret technical drawings, and adhere to stringent safety protocols. Such training not only enhances individual employability but also contributes to overall project quality and efficiency, thereby boosting the competitiveness of local construction firms (Obi, 2024).

Furthermore, modern teaching methodologies—such as simulation-based training and on-site apprenticeships—are being integrated into technical education curricula to provide real-world experience and improve learning outcomes (Nwosu, 2023). These innovative approaches are essential for addressing the skill deficits that have long plagued the construction industry in the region. However, challenges remain. Limited access to up-to-date training facilities, inadequate funding, and a shortage of industry-experienced instructors continue to undermine the effectiveness of technical education programs in Funakaye.

This study seeks to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how technical education can bridge the skill gap in the construction industry by identifying the key factors that affect training quality and industry alignment. The findings are expected to inform policy recommendations and practical interventions that will enhance the capacity of the local workforce, ultimately leading to improved construction practices and sustainable economic growth in Funakaye.

Statement of the Problem

The construction industry in Funakaye Local Government Area faces significant challenges due to a persistent shortage of skilled labor. Despite the recognized importance of technical education in addressing these deficiencies, current training programs have not fully met industry demands. Outdated curricula and insufficient practical training components result in graduates who possess theoretical knowledge but lack the hands-on experience necessary to apply modern construction techniques effectively (Emeka, 2023). This deficiency leads to delays in project delivery, compromised construction quality, and increased safety risks on job sites.

Additionally, the lack of collaboration between technical institutions and the construction industry contributes to a disconnect between what is taught and the skills required by employers. Many training programs in Funakaye fail to incorporate feedback from industry stakeholders, resulting in a workforce that is not adequately prepared for the challenges of contemporary construction projects (Obi, 2024). Furthermore, limited access to advanced training equipment and simulation tools further restricts the ability of these programs to deliver effective, industry-relevant instruction (Nwosu, 2023).

As a consequence, the local construction industry continues to suffer from inefficiencies and quality issues that hinder economic development. This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the skill gaps in the construction sector, with a focus on the role of technical education in mitigating these challenges. By identifying the limitations of current training methodologies and infrastructure, the research will propose targeted recommendations for enhancing the quality and relevance of technical education programs in Funakaye.

Objectives of the Study
